Arts & Culture Writing

I write about arts, culture, style, and design for publications including the historic British magazine Country Life and U.S. shelter magazines such as House Beautiful, with a focus on what’s happening in New York.

I have a particular interest in the world of interiors, having studied at the New York School of Interior Design.

I also write copy for independent galleries and artists, helping them craft messaging around exhibitions.

NYC’s boom in private members clubs

Country Life magazine, October 2025 (print and digital)

“New York has gone private and, in so doing, has become more like London, where private clubs have continuously been integral to social life — the stratification a feature, not a bug. In London, the barrier to membership has always been more social — who you know on the inside — than financial, with prospective members sometimes waiting years merely to get on a waiting list. Connections are certainly helpful in New York, but a lack of social capital can often be made up for with enough capital-capital, a cultural difference that will shock no keen observer.”

Generational art collecting

Country Life magazine, January 2026

“As Gen Z famously prioritizes experiences, it’s no surprise that the assets Art Basel says they’re disproportionately buying are things that lend themselves to said experiences. The jet-setting Gen Z-er happily takes a designer bag, Swiss watch or other wearable symbol of identity along; they’re not going to bring an oil painting on their excursion.”

The Frick restoration

“Further up Fifth Avenue, The Met dazzles with its sheer scale; you will never get through it all, no matter how many visits. The Frick, meanwhile, is of an afternoon. You pop in to see a special exhibit of European works on paper, to check in on Bellini’s St. Francis in the Desert. You take your in-laws when they’re in town.”

Bunny Mellon’s garden designs

“Oak Spring’s features have become part of American gardening iconography: the crabapple-canopied Allée; the espaliered holly trees; the potting shed’s trompe l’oeil murals; the Schlumberger-designed greenhouse finial, a bouquet in lead.”
